Our primary partner is the Center for Integrative Research on Childhood Leukemia and the Environment, out of the University of Berkeley, California.
The incidence of childhood leukemia in the U.S. has increased by roughly 35 percent since 1975, according to Dr. Metayer, citing cancer statistics from the National Cancer Institute’s Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program, and leukemia is one of the leading causes of childhood death in developed countries.
With availability of more effective treatments, survival has increased dramatically. Survivors, however, face many difficulties later in life, including debilitating medical and psychosocial complications, which also cause economic hardships for their families.
“Our goal is to identify the causes of childhood leukemia and to support prevention efforts by educating health practitioners, families and public health organizations on risk factors for leukemia,” Metayer says.
